icecream architecture carried out an extensive and intensive ‘city-wide conversation’ about the future of George Square in Glasgow. We designed a staged programme, starting with simultaneous online, on-street and on paper engagement, followed up by more in depth and participant-led workshops and events—engaging thousands of citizens in the process over a five week period.
As a high-profile consultation about an iconic location, the project required a careful and considered approach, attention to detail and agility in responding to both the client and the public reactions. Our programme was designed to steer the public conversation from reflexive responses through informed reflection to nuanced conclusions and practical ideas, resulting in a rich and extensive dataset shared with both the client and the public and an in-depth report for the client. The results can be found here. These outcomes formed an evidence base for Glasgow City Council to take forward in their ongoing development plans.
